Who caused Romeo and Juliet's death

In the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, there are many different characters that could be blamed with causing their deaths. I believe that Friar Lawrence was most responsible for this. It all started with the friar deciding to marry them. If he hadn't, they claimed they would commit suicide anyway. I believe if they really thought about it, there were plenty of options. The friar should not have been so willing to marry the relatives of the two rival families, even if he thought it would solve the family feud. He gave in to the pressure of Romeo and Juliet which he should not have done. Later in the play, the friar comes up with a plan that he believes will save Romeo and Juliet's marriage. The plan was incredibly risky. It involves Juliet drinking a poison that will almost kill her so they will believe she is dead. This is a bad idea because if the friar messes up the amount, it could easily kill her. Another issue with his plan is that he trusts Friar John with the message to be delivered to Romeo. This isn't smart because Friar John did not know the urgency of this message. Therefore, he thought that it was ok that it wasn't delivered. Friar Lawrence should have just gone to Romeo and told him himself. These are two reasons why the friars lack of thinking caused the death of Romeo and Juliet.

"These violent delights have violent ends."
Friar Lawrence is foreshadowing what will happen in the end and yet he still marries Romeo and Juliet knowing that there is no way it will end in a good way. This was not smart on Friar Lawrence's part.

"Hold daughter; I do spy a kind of hope."
Friar Lawrence is devising his risky plan. It is not a very good plan because he came up with it on the spot to try to stop Juliet from committing suicide. He should have thought the plan out more before coming up with this crazy plan.

  1. I agree with you because Friar Lawrence did make a lot of mistakes but he also made some good mistakes by offer some other choices to Juliet instead of committing suicide. But ultimately Romeo and Juliet took their own lives and Friar could've have done anything to stop them. They were too set on each other and decided that there wasn't any other way than death. That's why I think it's all Romeo and Juliet's own fault that they died.

  2. I agree with Ben, sorry, Ellie. Romeo and Juliet would not have had to take their own lives if the Friar hadn't married them. Or if he hadn't sent an untrustworthy colleague of his to do a job that basically determined life or death. The list goes on and on. It is because of this that it was not, in fact, R and J's fault, but Friar Laurence's.
